PATRICK DRINKWATER
My sculptures reflect my life-long fascination with trees. During the early '80s I developed and perfected a method of reproducing leafless miniatures in wire. The completed tree is initially nickel- plated then in some examples, covered in 24 carat gold.
Much of my inspiration comes from living on the Mendips where many trees struggle to gain a foothold in the craggy rocks.I use semi-precious crystals as settings for my work which mirror this triumph of nature over adversity.
I have exhibited at the Long and Ryle Gallery and the Alwin Gallery as well in the windows of Tiffanys in Bond Street. The Matsui Bank in London owns a custom-made, one metre high tree, the largest in my repertoire.
After a long gap, I am once again sculpting trees. I am experimenting with different materials on which to display my work; clay and perspex mingle with beautiful minerals. I am also exploring the interplay of light on the mounted trees, creating an aura of colour.
